It already works for its own nugatory, stupid!
Government and PoliticsJess writes "Years and years ago, I had a huge crush on Ninez Cacho Olivarez, editor and publisher of “The Daily Tribune.”

I loved her short stories. They appeared on weekly Women’s Journal then. Her short stories usually portrayed characters of elite background. Her heroin always elegant, classy and chic with wants and goals very different from the world I came from. I fantasized her characters. Also, as I thought Ninez to be the embodiment of the characters she created, she epitomized as a woman of my dream.

I chased her by-line, since then, in different publications. Then she became a peripatetic political pundit. As she jumped from one newspaper to another, her punditry targeted whoever occupies Malacanang Palace. From Ferdinand Marcos down to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in the expanse of more than twenty years, she dished out steady, unrelenting acerbic wits. Her constant criticism made her the pesky enemy of her target, that it becomes their ambition to silence her. But no one among the occupants of Malacanang, past or present, had ever been successful to shut her up. She continues to lash out her venom, and kowtow to no one.

Reluctant to give in her firebrand punditry seemed to be the reason why she moved from one daily to another. As she’s so focused to carry on with her mission - exposing warts on Malacanang and seeing imperfections of its occupiers - she established her own daily: “The Daily Tribune”, under the concept of “Without fear or favor”. Having the full control of the paper, The Daily Tribune appeared uniquely different from the mainstream. The Daily Tribune is the only broadsheet, where the entire pool of its writers collectively threading the same slant as that of hers. It is probably the only broadsheet well loved by the oppositionists.

I loved Ninez when she was still writing as individual columnist in each of the dailies that she worked for. Her penchant for negativity as she ironically put it in her issues offered a fresher viewpoint. Her column, as I read with the others, cast a different glow. Her train of thoughts delightfully smart. Her wits made me shake my head and chuckle.

Now, I am only impressed of her as a woman with two balls. Before, she was a prudent media practitioner, not anymore. She seems lost her credibility. I doubted Tribune’s believability. I still read Tribune though, but only to see, how worse or ugly the paper would present and interpret the current political events.

Take this story written by Ninez herself, headlined as - “Gloria readies exit plan; ‘Perfect Storm’ plot set. Palace to stage coup, install ‘New Order’ with loyal General,” - for example.

The “Tribune’s” Internet Edition first published this story on December 14, 2005. On January 2, and January 8, 2006, it reissued that same story in toto. What was the reason publishing the story thrice? I suspected Ninez wanted to pound to the reader’s mind the image of a country in a cusp of chaos and anarchy. The scenarios she described, it almost smells fiction. And what did she offer as the story’s source? It buttressed to a phrase that sound - “according to the confidential do*****ent leaked by a Palace Insider”. Hello! Funny to think that having Ninez known as Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s rabid critic, the confidential do*****ent exclusively landed on its lap, undermining the Malacanang’s intelligence, helpless to detect the leakage, much more so, the conduit!

Linda Montayre, an oppositionist and Philippine Consultative Assembly convener, accused the First Gentleman, Mike Arroyo of earning “dirty money” for the deployment of 100,000 Filipinas in Japan reportedly to work as prostitute.

On March 3, 2003, Tribune picked up the story and published this headline: “Mike A getting P23B yearly from DOLE”

Mike Arroyo filed a libel suit against Montayre, Ninez Cacho Olivarez, the publisher, and Olaes, the reporter, for false and malicious utterance that exposed him to public ridicule and contempt, and caused dishonor to his name, integrity and reputation. The Department of Justice supported the filing of libel charges against the respondents.

Records show that Montayre did not substantiate her allegation, and there is no showing also that Ninez and Olaes of Tribune verified the fact and ascertained the accuracy of what they reported and published.

In an effort perhaps maintaining the paper’s image of toughness, being different from the mainstream, it somehow deviated from the desired objectivity and balance sought by most newspapers. The Tribune goes beyond the characteristics of “responsible media practitioner” Pronouncements, opinions, spoken by the oppositionists seem to be are good copies that can always find print without verification of its accuracy. Citing of unidentified and malicious sources has always been the staple of certain stories.

On February 24, 2006, President Arroyo ordered the “main menu” of Proclamation 1071: Quell the military coup d’ etat. As a “side dish”, the Philippine National Police raided the Daily Tribune’s office.

The “side dish” was unnecessary. Obviously, the raid was to exact vengeance. No one can cow Ninez, who survived the outstanding 17-arrest order for libel suits. No one can stop her doing what she love and does best. She would pummel on no matter what, giving nightmares to whoever occupies Malacanang.

The kind of credibility that Tribune generates is enough reason why the government should have left it alone. It already works for its own nugatory, stupid!
