  BLENDING THE TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY: A FESTIVAL OF PHILIPPINE ARTS AND CUL
Art & LiteratureSouthern California's Largest Filipino American Tradition Features Trademark Mix Of Entertainment and Artistry

(Los Angeles) If there's one thing attendees flocking to experience the annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) can expect, it's a mix -- a mix of tastes, languages and generations. Featuring a trademark blend of contemporary and traditional artists, FPAC is one of the most dynamically-programmed cultural events in the nation.

The 14th edition of this popular community-wide tradition -- the largest of its kind in Southern California -- takes place September 10 and 11 at breathtaking Point Fermin, 807 Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro. Aptly themed "Home", this year's event brings together over 150 artists, numerous performers, recognizable film, television and radio personalities and artisans in celebration of Southern California's largest Asian ethnic group.

Amazingly, in its decade and half of existence, FPAC has seen over a quarter of a million attendees enjoy its mission of showcasing the unique arts and diverse cultures of the Filipino Diaspora and no small part of that has been its ability to draw inspiration from a bountiful array of multiple generations.

"My favorite event? It's FPAC, without a doubt, namely because of the mutual respect afforded to both artist and audience." says Bambu, one half of the popular hip hop duo, Native Guns. "I'm honored to perform there but, performer or not, it's precisely the type of event I would support anyway because of the wealth of offerings.

"I've never come away from FPAC feeling less than satisfied about the programming mix or less than fully proud about being Pinoy."

PAKARAGUIAN KULINTANG ENSEMBLE is an example of the unique blend brought forth on FPAC stages. Comprised almost exclusively of Filipino American ethnomusicology PhD candidates and students, the group exists to keep alive the hypnotic beats and melodies of kulintang gong music native to Mindanao, a wonderful representation of ethnic preservation and pride.

Fresh from his new series on MTV, wildly-popular comic artist REX NAVARRETE returns to FPAC, his favorite venue, to perform his unique brand of comedic social commentary which has seen him headline countless sold-out venues in four continents. Laughter is guaranteed throughout as New York City-based Pinoy comic/poet REGGIE CABICO, San Diego-based comedy dance team ABALOS PROS and improvisational comedy troupe ROOM TO IMPROV will perform as well.

The Pinoy reputation for vocal melody is well-known and two giant talents of song will make their respective FPAC debuts this year in Harlem Lee, winner of the NBC reality talent show "Fame," and the hair-standing vocals of Dessa, Asia's "divette."

On the traditional side, BIBAK, KAYAMANAN NG LAHI, SAMPAGUITA YOUTH DANCE GROUP and Senior dance troupes from Gardena and Carson assure that the rich Filipino dance tradition lives on while the deadly Filipino martial arts are represented by KALI KLUB/KAPA and IMB ACADEMY.

The ever-increasing representation by Filipino performers in contemporary music will be on display courtesy of performances by all-girl SAME DAY SERVICE, a popular Austin, Texas-based power punk trio fresh from performances at SXSW and an extended tour of Europe. Bubbling just under mainstream's surface is conscious Pinoy hip hop duo NATIVE GUNS, in the midst of a tour and performing their fist-raising raps at FPAC for a 3rd consecutive year. Pinay singer/musician JENNILEE, a frequent recent
collaborator with the BLACK EYE PEAS, also makes her anticipated debut before Pinoy audiences.

Taking place from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. both days, FPAC has become a bona fide Southern California tradition, drawing participants from as far away as Seattle, New York, Hawaii, Florida and Toronto. Admission both days is a fully tax deductable $3. Free parking, with continuous-running shuttle/Jeepney, is located at various public lots in San Pedro.

Back this year is the Culinary Arts Showcase where prominent Filipino American chefs from some of Los Angeles' finest restaurants including Rodelio Aglibot (Yi Cuisine) and Cecilia de Castro (Spago), tempt the appetites as they showcase Filipino cuisine through high-level cooking demonstrations, lessons and taste-testing of savory fare such as adobo, lumpia, and pancit (noodles).

And because of its proximity to Hollywood, FPAC, perhaps more than any other ethnic event of its type, draws more than its share of participation from mainstream Filipinos in film, television and sports. Regular attendees now know to expect a number of "surprise" visits throughout the event and while organizers prefer tight-lipped about this year's attendees, it's a good bet that from mainstage emcees to Adobo Cooking Contest judges, more than a handful of faces will be recognizable ones.

Also unique to FPAC is a myriad of arts-intensive and community-based offerings:

- 7th FPAC/Balagtasan Poetry Slam. An ultrapopular tradition within a tradition returns and generally draws spillover crowds;
- 6th Vegetable Growing Competition spotlights the those with a penchant for gardening;
- 4th Annual Amateur DJ Battle, co-sponsored by Stacks Vinyl and, like the slam, accompanied by enthusiastic audiences.
- The Community Wellness Village where attendees can educate themselves on important health and environmental issues;
- The Seniors Village, which also celebrates the community through storytelling, performances and workshops;
- Pinoy Visions, taking place Sept. 8 and co-presented with Visual Communications, now on its 13th edition of showcasing works by established and emerging Filipino and Filipino American film and video artists;
- The Youth Pavillion, which offers interactive arts and crafts and dance workshops.

Purchasable art -- including paintings, literature and music -- is available at the Pilipino Artists Network Pavilion. Savory Filipino and other Asian cuisine from the Marketplace by the Sea and continuous entertainment on three stages overlooking the Pacific Ocean make the cultural immersion complete for families and friends.

HOME -- the 14th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) is a program of the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture (FilAm ARTS) is sponsored by AEG Staples Center/Home Depot Center; City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department; City of Los Angeles Community Development Department; California Arts Council; LA County Arts Commission; 13th District Councilmember Eric Garcetti; 15th District Councilmember Janice Hahn; Fund for Folk Culture; California Wellness Foundation; California Endownment; The Getty Foundation; Wells Fargo; Philippine Expressions Bookshop; Mama Sita's/Lola Sita's; SkyFlakes/SuperQ Bihon/Mogu Mogu; Asian Noodles; Bestway Supermarkets; Stacks Vinyl and KSCI-TV.

Los Angeles-based Fil-Am Arts, the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts -- a non-profit, 501 C3 organization -- aims to present, promote, produce and preserve the rich and diverse arts and culture of the Philippines and Filipino people.
