TAHANAN PRESENTS BALLET MANILA IN CHICAGO
Art & LiteratureCHICAGO, IL — The Philippines' foremost ballet company, Ballet Manila, is scheduled to perform on Sunday, June 19, 2005 in the Harris Theater at Chicago's Millennium Park. Ballet Manila will showcase the uniqueness and richness of the Philippine culture with a concert filled with incredible dancing and world-class artistry all highlighting the beauty of the Philippines. Chicago's Philippine cultural group, Tahanan, proudly hosts Ballet Manila's inaugural visit to Chicago on the day commemorating the birthday of writer, patriot and Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Former Ballet Manila member, and current principal dancer of the Nashville Ballet, Christopher Mohnani describes Ballet Manila's performances as, "neo-classical". He adds, "The dancers are still going to be en pointe, but this isn't straight classical ballet with tutus and tiaras and straight pas de deux." Instead, concertgoers should expect cultural costumes and exciting pieces based on Philippine traditional dances. Ballet Manila's artistic director is internationally acclaimed ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, formerly of the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia.

About Ballet Manila
Philippines - Critics have referred to Ballet Manila as the "ballet company of the new millennium" because of its unwavering commitment to excellence in classical dance, both as a professional performing company and as a formidable training ground for young dancers. Ballet Manila has achieved an impressive track record of over 200 local performances - from Abra to Zamboanga. They have brought the magic of dance to Filipinos from all walks of life and in all corners of the archipelago, performing classical and neo-classical ballet pieces in non-traditional venues without compromising the fine artistry of its
craft.

In 1995, within six months of its creation, Ballet Manila (BM) was invited to represent the Philippines at the 2nd International Music Festival of the Asia-Pacific Region in Krasnoyarsk, extending to a six-week Russian Tour comprising in four Siberian cities. The following year, BM went on a four-city tour of the United States, including a debut performance in New York to celebrate Philippine Independence Day. It was the first gala performance of a Filipino classical ballet ensemble in what is considered "the dance capital of the world". A 2004 Ballet Manila highlight is the completion of another successful US tour, where the company presented shows jam-packed theaters in Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, Washington
D.C., Michigan, and Ohio.

About Tahanan

Tahanan is a non-profit organization with an end goal of establishing a Philippine museum in Chicago. Tahanan's board members are comprised of civic-minded individuals from within the Midwest's Filipino American community, who are in the process of establishing an organization that seeks to promote awareness of the Filipino heritage and legacy.

Tahanan will pursue its mission to provide comprehensive cultural, literary, performing arts, and civic programs by becoming the educational stop for those who wish to know more about the Philippines. The organization hopes to create an edifice, which the Filipino community can proudly identify with, congregate and ultimately use as its epicenter. To encompass these goals the name "Tahanan" was chosen, which translated from Tagalog means "home". Tahanan - the future home of Filipino arts and culture.
