  Asthmatics and Arnold Wanna-be’s
Health and Fitnessby: Shaolin

I have a weak disposition. I have weak lungs and an actual pinhole in my heart. I am told that the reason I do not have any baby pictures is because I was always in and out of hospitals so much in my infancy and I assume that nobody had the heart to take pictures of a frail little creature with a presumably short life span. I am told that when I came out of my mother’s womb I looked like a “butiki”, a small iguana-like house lizard. Well, that’s my infancy in a nutshell.

I have asthma. I’ve had it since I was a little butiki and I still have it. It comes and goes but with less frequency now and not as debilitating as it was before. But it still does a number on me sometimes. I’ve read in a medical magazine somewhere that asthma is practically incurable. It just stays dormant and sometimes doesn’t manifest again in one’s adult life but most people require regular treatment such as nebulizers and those little sprays that I’ve been most fortunate enough never to have had a need for. Some people have amazing physiques, look for all the world like they’re in excellent health yet still have asthma. Like Nicolas Cage’s character in “Kiss of Death” who, despite having a bodybuilder’s physique, still needs medication from time to time.

I don’t have a bodybuilder’s physique. I look a whole helluva lot better now than I did four years ago but I still would not say, in all honesty, that I have one of those amazing Flex magazine bodies, despite the fact that I have been lifting weights since 2001 (although I did stop for about a year in 2002 to pursue a crash course in martial arts but I’ll talk about that in another article). The sad truth is that genetics play a crucial role in a person’s appearance and I, unfortunately, am as genetically predisposed to have an Arnold-like body as Andy Dick.

As I have said, there is a very noticeable change in my physique but not enough yet to satisfy me. Friends and acquaintances come up to me now and comment about this but it still doesn’t satisfy me. I want more. I want much more. I want mindblowing pecs and a shirt-tearing back. I want legs like Jean Claude Van Damme and Frank Zane. I want bis and tris that the ladies can’t wait to wrap their arms around and swoon all over in complete mindless ecstasy. I want big. I want massive. I want freaky. This is why I do what I have been doing for some time now and will continue to do for as long as I am physically capable of doing it.

It’s hard though. It’s hard when it seems as though you’re fighting against genetics, against nature itself. Sometimes it feels like no matter how hard I try nature will always be one up on me.

Have you ever seen a hamster go through one of those rotating thingies and just go on and on and on without ever really getting anywhere? Well, sometimes that’s exactly how I feel. Like the proverbial gambler who sits at the table night after night well aware that it’s rigged but can’t seem to walk away from the only game in town. Like a cross-dressing drag queen who knows that he could never be a real woman even with the assistance of the most expensive medical technology. Sometimes it seems as if you’re walking a lonely road that leads to disappointment; that your best just doesn’t amount to a hill of lima beans. I slap myself silly when that happens. I really do. Oww.

We go on. If we have a dream and we believe its worth pursuing then we knuckle up and shout “lock and load” and plant our feet squarely in the ground while about a million squid-like machines come crashing through the ceiling with bloody murder in their artificial minds. We soldier on and that’s exactly what I do.

Most people will never understand what compels a man (or a woman for that matter) to defy nature and submit his body to pain and torture in the hope that it would swell to abnormal size and fill up his t-shirt. Most people just dismiss it as vanity. Outright, unabashed love for one’s self. The futile pursuit of an imagined image of physical perfection that would eventually whither away and die in an impermanent material world. Still others say that it is just over-compensation for some weakness or inferiority over some childhood traumatic experience. In most cases they’re probably right. Hell, they’d probably be right in all cases. So what. A person should never base his life on what others want him to be. We forfeit ourselves when we do this. We abandon the only thing in this life that is our only birthright –the freedom to be who we want to be.

See you in the gym.
