Main Argument For Preserving Our Languages
Culture & Traditionsby Jed Pensar, a.k.a. Dr. Jose Dacudao

Language defines a people. A Visayan who cannot speak a Visayan language, even if he or she was born and grew up in the Visayas-Mindanao area, where there have been Visayans for more than a thousand years, is not Visayan. He has been cut off from an ancient cultural identity that remains one of the oldest in the world. Or how can a person be an Ilocano if he cannot speak it? You can't speak Kapampangan? Then you are not Kapampangan. Ditto for Bicolanos, Warays, and all the rest. Without our language, we have no culture, we have no identity; we are nothing.

  Filipino Nicknames
Culture & TraditionsA real Joker (no kidding)
ALAN ROBLES

Question: which of the following is not a Filipino nickname? Bongbong, Chin-Chin, Ding-dong, Lotlot, Ai-Ai. Answer: they are all Filipino nicknames. Foreigners new here often marvel at how so many Filipinos sport nicknames which are, how shall we say it, quaint, and charming and - oh, all right - they read like violent sound effects in a Looney Tunes cartoon.

  THE ILOCANO WAY OF SAVING
Culture & Traditionsby: Rodel J. Ramos

The Ilocanos, sometimes called the solid north because of their united vote during elections are worth studying for their colorful history, character and survival techniques which we can copy not only during hard times but as a way of life in order to avoid the humps and turns of life. Generally, Ilocanos are known as hard working, loyal workers frugal or prudent savers, responsible family men and visionaries.

Culture & Traditions(for GRAPHIC Feb, 28, 2005)
by Krip Yuson

I bet that by the 2010s, classrooms will be hailing a bunch of LeBrons during roll call. As “The Chosen One” among the NBA’s latest young superstars, LeBron James seems to assure continued ascension as Michael Jordan’s “Air Apparent” — and this should dawn on more and more sports-inclined fathers. So it’ll be LeBron de la Cruz, LeBron Ramos, LeBron Lee, LeBron Arespacochaga, LeBron Tamondong and a host of other King James wannabe’s appearing in civil registry records throughout our islands.

A synchronicity tax, oh yes, thank goodness we don’t have that yet. Otherwise I might have landed in the poorhouse last week when, starting on this column-review of certain titles that should enhance our current drive toward regaining excellence in the English language, what should fall on my lap but this heavy tome straight out of California, titled I Take Thee, English, for My Beloved.

Perryscope: Dawn of a New Dark Age
Culture & TraditionsBy Perry Diaz

A few weeks ago, a small band of self-proclaimed crusaders -- using the Internet as their bully pulpit -- declared War Against American Junk Books (WAAJB). At first, I thought that they were referring to pornographic books. No. The target of their attack was the Books-for-the-Barrios (B4B), a non-profit organization that has been sending American books to different barrios in the Philippines for more than 25 years.
