WOW Philippines: WONDER at OUR WEAVERS
History and HeritageA once in a lifetime chance to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines takes place in San Francisco as the Philippine Consulate General, the Philippine Department of Tourism, the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry, the Philippine Center Management Board, in partnership with the Asian Art Museum, the Bayanihan Movement Inc., and Philippine Airlines, bring to the Bay Area three of the country's best weavers. Philippine Tourism Director Rene Delos Santos asserts that the one-of-a-kind exhibit is in line with Department's WOW Philippines campaign, showcasing the country's Wealth of Wonders. "Each and every Filipino should know and experience a piece of the country's rich cultural heritage; be it in the Philippines or anywhere they may be. It is also a good opportunity to demonstrate to the world how creative the Philippine art of weaving is", says Delos Santos.

HISTORY VS HOLLYWOOD: THE GREAT RAID
History and HeritageNote: The I'm not sure who the original author is of this article, but it was forwarded by Emma Ruth Yulo of the Philippine Department of Tourism, New York. - Don

-------------------------------------

Did you ever stop to think whether a story is true or if details presented as "facts" actually did happen where and when the story says they did?

John Verhoff, Managing Producer of AETN (A & E Television Networks) - History Channel - led a group to actually retrace the path of "The Great Raid" and produce a film based on actual history. Director Emma Ruth Yulo of the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT), New York, backed by Secretary of Tourism Joseph Ace Durano, provided encouragement and facilitation for this seemingly ominous task that resulted in a "great" documentary put together in record time.

US Chargè d'Affaires Joseph Mussomeli of the US Embassy in Manila is an unabashed admirer of the "boy general", Gregorio Del Pilar. In his speech at the opening of the GBR Museum in Cavite a year ago, Consul Mussomeli shared his sentiment that "of all the famous people of that era, Gregorio Del Pilar has always been my favorite."

History and HeritageKeynote Address by Senator Daniel K. Akaka of Hawaii
May 9, 2005

Aloha - I would like to thank Librarian of Congress James Billington and the staff of the Library of Congress for providing me with this opportunity to participate in your 2005 Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month observance. I am honored to share with you my thoughts as we commemorate APA Heritage Month and recognize the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. As a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, the only Chinese American in the U.S. Senate, and sole Native Hawaiian in the U.S. Congress, I am proud to stand here to honor the accomplishments and diversity of the AAPI community.

If the history books you studied in high school, whether in the Philippines or in the US, referred to a certain turn-of-the-century conflict as “the Philippine Insurrection”, then please take note: the US Library of Congress has made a change. It is now officially known as “the Philippine American War”.

In 1274, Khubilai Khan, grandson of the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Kahn, having conquered most of China, decided to attack Japan and expand the Mongolian Empire beyond the shorelines of China. The invading force consisted of 900 ships and 23,000 troops. But bad weather stopped the Mongols and the invasion was aborted. In 1281, the Mongols tried again, this time with an armada of 4,000 ships. However, a strong hurricane stopped the invading forces.

  Telltale Signs: BOONDOCKS AND JAZZ
History and HeritageBy Rodel Rodis

At first glance, the words "jazz" and "boondocks" share precious little in common. One is generally associated with hip, urban, African Americans while the other usually refers to back country areas populated by unsophisticated "rednecks". The ironic exception is a comic strip about African Americans called "Boondocks".

The Philippines' national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, was known in history as the "Pride of the Malay Race." However, Philippine history books rarely made any reference to the Filipinos' Malay heritage. What is so special about our Malay roots that made Rizal the poster boy of the Malay Race? Why not "Pride of the Filipino People." Where exactly did Filipinos come from?

History and HeritageRodel E. Rodis, Philippine News, April 11, 2005

Just when it seemed all but hopeless that the Philippines would ever recover the Bells of Balangiga from Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, a glimmer of hope emerged on March 23 when the Wyoming Veterans' Commission reversed itself and unexpectedly passed a resolution in favor of returning the Bells of Balangiga back to the Philippines.

PerryScope: Hilario Moncado: A Hero or a Charlatan?
History and HeritageBy Perry Diaz

At the Philippine Constitutional Convention in 1934, a tall and handsome young man presented his credentials as the elected representative from the province of Cebu. No big deal, he was just one of several hundred delegates. However, what intrigued his fellow delegates was his claim that he had power to heal the sick. To restrain the boastful pretender from making any embarrassing display of his imagined prowess, his peers appointed him as the "Official Time Keeper" and seated him next to a large clock. He took his assignment seriously and attended every session. He made sure nobody exceeded his allotted time. His role kept him so busy that he did not even have the time to participate in the debates.

At my induction as president of the San Francisco Community College Board last week, I told Mayor Gavin Newsom and the other guests that I chose that day for my induction because I believe that 50 years from now, it will be feted as a world holiday. Just as October 24 will be celebrated in that hopeful future as United Nations Day, February 22 will be venerated as People Power Day.

PerryScope: A Tale of Three Flags
History and HeritageBy Perry Diaz

Recently, there has been some excitement about the "discovery" of the flag that Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo unfurled on June 12, 1898, when he declared Philippine independence from Spain. The "discovery" happened when a Filipino-American in San Francisco saw a flag tacked inside a glass display case in the San Francisco War Memorial. The local Pinoy thought that the faded red, white and blue flag may be the missing historic flag hoisted by Aguinaldo on the balcony of his home in Kawit, Cavite in 1898.

On July 7, 1892, Andres Bonifacio -- upon hearing the news that Dr. Jose Rizal was arrested and deported to Dapitan the day before -- called for a meeting with five of his friends. That night, they organized a secret society called Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangan na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Highest and Most Respected Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Nation) -- in short, Katipunan. Bonifacio was named their Supremo.
