   In Pursuit of
Personal Stories and ExperiencesJess writes "Doomsayer and do-gooder populate Philippine Newspapers. This idea came in to me in small increments. Consequently, it loomed large in my face. I combed all the Philippines newspapers compiled by newswealth.com and identify columnists who are doomsayer and do-gooder in their opinions. This is what I found. Doomsayers are not in short supply, and do-gooders are catching up. However, there are columnists, too, who often time switch sides. I couldn’t pigeonhole them as either doomsayer or do-gooder. Their dual interchanging persona intrigued me. What do you call a person who is a cross between doomsayer and a do-gooder... a “pessimist-altruist”? Is there such a tag?

  life's a *****
Personal Stories and Experiencesleviuqse writes "Chasing Tail - As I write this, out of the corner of my eye I can see our neighbor’s dog, Mikmik, trying to catch his tail. He's making tight, frantic little circles, nearly spinning off his axis, just to get a taste of that which he thinks he simply MUST have. The very elusiveness of his tail is what makes him so adamant about capturing it. Mikmik is cute, but a little dim. Okay, he's the doggie equivalent of a box of rocks when it comes to intellect, but all of us in the neighborhood love him. Of COURSE, he's never going to catch his tail. And if by some miracle he DID, he'd only end up hurting himself by enthusiastically chomping down on it. You can't tell him that, though. He's on a quest. And he's stupid. Lovable, but stupid.

Personal Stories and Experiencesleviuqse writes "If life is truly one huge highway, then we can be sure that the highway will cover all kinds of terrain. Hopefully, a long road that will have it's share of hills and valleys. As long as we're moving, regardless of time and speed, we are heading somewhere...the problems arise when we get sidetracked, confused, or simply stuck in the mud.

  baliw?
Personal Stories and Experiencesleviuqse writes "When I was a child, I was always told that the world is a wonderful place, and that there are only a few bad apples out there wreaking havoc upon the masses. Good prevailed over Evil, and when something went wrong, it was only a way for us to learn and improve our lives. While that may be true, one day I asked myself, "If there are so many good people walking around, how come the world for so long has been such a mess?" All a person has to do is open the Bible, and over and over again there are scriptures telling us about the landscape in which we live. I am not one who takes kindly to refuge in falsehood...I do believe the Truth does set you free.

  pag-ibig
Personal Stories and Experiencesleviuqse writes "One of the greatest human fears is living, being, and dying alone; however, there is something that can overcome this fear, and that is love. What is love? Can you see it? Does one touch love, or is love only to be sensed? Does true love exist, or is it just a cheap thrill that lasts for one night? Does love have substance or is it merely a word fabricated as a way to justify the means of propagation?

I know a part of my uncle's story, but he's quite complicated and I didn't fully understand him. His life was a tapestry of images, maybe that's why.

Speech of John Gokongwei before Ateneo 2004 Graduates
Personal Stories and ExperiencesI wish I were one of you today, instead of a 77-year-old man, giving a speech you will probably forget when you wake up from your hangover tomorrow. You may be surprised I feel this way. Many of you are feeling fearful and apprehensive about your future. You are thinking that, perhaps, your Ateneo diploma will not mean a whole lot in the future in a country with too many problems. And you are probably right. You are thinking that our country is slipping-no, sliding. Again, you may be right.

Twenty years ago, we were at par with countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Today, we are left way behind. You know the facts.

Distorted bodies, twisted legs, floppy arms, stiff hands and fingers, contorted faces, drooling saliva, blank stares … of children with cerebral palsy. This is the sight that welcomed me as I entered the center of the Philippine Cerebral Palsy. I felt a sudden feeling of gloom and hopelessness.

  Reasons for staying put
Personal Stories and Experiencesby Krip Yuson for GRAPHIC

It's been grossly exaggerated among circles of friends that my family and I are taking the plunge and migrating to Canada. Well, I must say that if there were a country I'd choose for a family transplant, indeed, it would have to be that exemplary destination, where Vancouver beckons as a superb, second-chance habitat. In fact, last September we did exercise our landing rights as immigrants, capping the final stage of a process that was initiated a couple of years or so ago when I had my wife fill up such forms as are necessary for a principal applicant.

  Always a Filipino
Personal Stories and ExperiencesHeart to Heart Talk With Philip S. Chua, M.D.
By: Perry Diaz

My wife, Farida, and I left the Philippines for medical residency training in Chicago under the foreign student exchange program on December 31, 1962, about a year and a half after our graduation from medical school. I remember spending the New Year's eve aboard Northwest Airlines, mostly in a fetal position in our seats, uncomfortable and restless, trying very hard to sleep, as the other passengers (Americans, Europeans, and some Asians) were merrymaking, drinking champagne and toasting the old year out and the new year in.
