When Obligation can be a Motivation
Personal Stories and ExperiencesJess writes " My most recent blog, ''It already works for it's own nugatory, stupid”, dated March, 2006, killed my momentum in blogging. I stopped cold turkey, just like when I quitted smoking.

My Editor, Tess Dizon, of "Peryodiko", one of the Filipino community based paper in Winnipeg asked me to delete the word "stupid" from the title which I used as my emphatic punch line to end my article. She e-mailed me saying, Greg Makabenta, one of her imported columnist from the Philippines used the same "word" in his column, and readers seemed cold on it. Her excuse seemed flimsy. There must be a bigger issue beneath it. I e-mailed her back, the context of which runs like this. The "stupid" in the article is a derivation of the "It's the economy, stupid", a catch phrase that propelled Bill Clinton's popularity in his march to the White House, and the offshoot derivations of that phrase have been in use in the international media. How could have Tess received flak for that? She didn’t e-mail me after that. However, as "'Peryodiko's" deadline for publication approaches, she e-mailed me again, saying I have to change the word "nugatory". She said, Filipino Winnipegger are not that intellectual to dig my word, and do not have time to bother themselves looking for a dictionary. "It stays", I said. And Tess said, then, I have to invoke my rights as Editor dropping the word off. "Okay", I said, "just don't print the article, it’s alright". Right then, I severed my relationship with Tess.

Obviously, Tess’ paper and myself were not compatible. That specific article could be so controversial to her taste, and I believed, she was adamant to use it. It was useless to tell Tess those deliberate decisions I employ in choosing every word I put in every article.
And, as I confirmed the paper’s inadequacy matching my productivity, coupled with the impression that Tess wanted to discipline my writing, I said, I had enough! I write for gratis ... and yet Tess disposed off that superior upper hand attitude as if I work for her. All I wanted is the psychic income seeing my thoughts worded with my creative juices in print, and if one is going to censor them in an unjustifiable way, I rather had my ego starved.

With blogging though, I wouldn’t necessary get my ego starved. I have several internet sites to throw in my thoughts. Yet, why I don’t keep my creative juices flow then? Why don’t I litter the networld with my rants, the right venue to expunge, really, whatever it is that my heart harbors, worried least of censorship? Why did I quit? Why I am stuck? Fact is, with no compelling obligation lurking on my back, I am a lazy bone. Laziness is my nemesis. If obligation can motivate me, I invite the net denizen to compel me. Tell me, hey, you have obligation to your reader.

Based on the aggregate “reads” gathered by my sites, I have, maybe an average read of 3,000 per month. Most of these people are passive clicker. They just click and read, but don’t shout. I wanted to hear their noises: grunts or hosannas. It can massage my ego. It can get my momentum to blog again. But ... would they?

Don't be obligated, be responsible... If you are obligated, you are forced to do something you may not want to do, but responsibility comes from within and is a more powerful motivation....
