  Not Quite As Advertised
Religion & Philosophyleviuqse writes "Last week, I bought a pen. The pen costs one Jolly Hotdog Meal, yeah I know it’s kinda hefty, but I’m after what its ad says, that it’ll look good in any kind of paper (I mean the writing). Then I thought hmmm, a nice pen will be a hit if I’ll also buy an “OA” priced notebook. So I also bought a notebook that promises a lot in its poster.

When I tried my two precious purchased items, I thought wow, my penmanship is nice lookin’, the paper, smooth, and the pen’s performance, awesome. When I continued to the next section of what I’m writing, the pen seems to stick to the paper, there’s a friction, the ink was blotting and I can’t read a single thing I wrote. It just looked like squiggly marks made by an adik, just like texts that can be read if you’re from another quadrant of this universe.

The pen’s functioning was soo bad, the notebook “wa wenta” and my handwriting….pffft.

So where’s the truth in advertising?

-------

I happen to watch TV after 45 years (just jokin, after 3 months actually). And I’ve become conscious of how beauty products ads have invaded our screens. Telling “ choose this and you’ll look like that”, “take this and you’ll have this”, “Promise !”

And of course for it to be a super hit, the one swaying beside the dancing product is a voluptuous, white skinned, straight backed, sexy girl with a superb hair due to special graphic effects. Or a beautiful guy (too beautiful for masculinity) that looks gorgeous wearing only a towel.

Sad reality of course, nobody thinks the product will sell if they’ll put an Aeta model beside the dear manufactured goods.

Today, the definition of the word beautiful has shrunk down in having a 36-24-36 body, having a silky smooth hair, pointed nose and fair skin. And people are going gaga (no, not the English gaga but the Tagalog) just to be physically attractive. Because it is one of the major thing to have to be accepted by the culture.

Because it is what the society wants us to be.

Bawal ang panget.

Just because the environment dictates such a thing, do we really have to follow?

------

I remember when I’ve had a very large boil under my left eye. It’s sooo aching that it makes me dizzy, and I felt so ugly. Then I’ve decided to put on a band-aid to protect the boil from the dusts that could infect it more severely. When I look at myself in the mirror, I thought;

“Syet, mukhang mukhang pugante”

When I stepped outside the house to leave for work, the playing kids stopped and looked at me with awe, looking at the thingamagy on my face, I feel discomfited.

A mother with her child rode the jeep I was in. They sat on my opposite. Just like the kids in our baranggay, the little kid was staring at me, his eyes twinkling in amazement (I wager he thought he was seeing an anime hero, hehe), then he turned to his mom and said, “Mama, bili mo ko ng ganong sticker.”

(Hmm, so the conclusion…. I am still cute even with a plastic strip pasted on my face, okay okay, its not the conclusion)

Again, in the simple eyes of a child it struck me. Not just because the society is saying that if you have strange things on your face you’re now in the ugly category.

It is this, if you feel bad about yourself, you’ll feel stupid. But if you start looking at yourself in different light, being beautiful is more that just having Angel Locsin’s or Brad Pitt’s adjectives.

Because of the little boy, raw simplicity thumped my head again. And the world is lying to us!

The world is just advertising ugly people to be “ugly”, but it’s just a big hoax. We are all beautiful.

By the very principles the social order is insisting, it distorts how you and I look at ourselves. We no longer appreciate ourselves as God-created beings with eternal souls and unique beauty destined for Glory, only if we just see ourselves in our own illumination. What we only see are our scars.

So shut those words that keep haunting you telling you are panget, nognog, kups. It is just an acknowledgement that you’re distinctive.

Take John Lapuz’s words……maganda ka naman, sa paningin ng Diyos.

--------------
The writer was so bewildered when he then grabbed his 6 peso Panda pen and 8 peso Aspen Notes, and the writing result was great. Well, being beautiful and expensive is not everything.
