HISTORY VS HOLLYWOOD: THE GREAT RAID
History and HeritageNote: The I'm not sure who the original author is of this article, but it was forwarded by Emma Ruth Yulo of the Philippine Department of Tourism, New York. - Don

-------------------------------------

Did you ever stop to think whether a story is true or if details presented as "facts" actually did happen where and when the story says they did?

John Verhoff, Managing Producer of AETN (A & E Television Networks) - History Channel - led a group to actually retrace the path of "The Great Raid" and produce a film based on actual history. Director Emma Ruth Yulo of the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT), New York, backed by Secretary of Tourism Joseph Ace Durano, provided encouragement and facilitation for this seemingly ominous task that resulted in a "great" documentary put together in record time.

Managing Producer John Verhoff and host Geoffrey Wawro arrived in Manila on Wednesday, July 13 on board the same flight taken by the Ambassador's/Consuls General Tour from New York. Producer/Director James Gaffey and Director of Photography Jay Maurer preceded their arrival in the Philippines by one day.

The group was whisked off by DOT/PCVC coordinator Resty Dimacuha to Corregidor, Bataan, Cabanatuan, Capas and Camp O'Donnell. Key officials of each province/town welcomed the group and offered utmost assistance and vital information that would add substance to the film. PDOT's enthusiasm and the cooperation given by both local officials and private entities, including Sun Cruises, Magsaysay Tours & Travel, Corregidor Foundation, Microtel and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts helped the AETN crew produce a very interesting and outstanding film, laden with historical facts unbeknownst to many of us.

Know the truth. Know your historical facts. Don't miss "History vs Hollywood: The Great Raid" on the History Channel. First showing will be on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 11:00 PM (EST). The film "The Great Raid" is set to premiere in US cinemas on August 12. It is an account of the daring mission undertaken by Colonel Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt) with the aid of Filipino guerrillas led by Captain Juan Pajota (Cesar Montano) that liberated over 500 American Prisoners of War from the
notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp.

"The Great Raid" is based on "The Great Raid" book by William B. Breuer, the national bestseller book "Ghost Soldiers" by Hamptom Sides, and "Hour of Redemption" (The Heroic WWII Saga of America's Most daring POW Rescue) by Forrest Bryant Johnson. Several other books have been written to describe this most daring feat. We quote General Douglas MacArthur on February 1, 1945: "No incident of the campaign in the Pacific has given me such satisfaction as the release of the POWS at Cabanatuan.
The mission was brilliantly successful."
