Stanford Welcomes Filipino Novelist F. Sionil José as Writer in Residence
Culture & TraditionsStanford's Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages Welcomes Filipino Novelist F. Sionil José as Writer in Residence

Stanford, March 9, 2005 - The Research Unit in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at Stanford University is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of Filipino novelist F. Sionil José as the DLCL's Writer in Residence for 2005. During his one-month stay, from April 15 through May 15, José will visit classes, hold office hours, and present two events:

… Wednesday, April 27: José's Dusk: A Colloquium. Advanced undergraduates in Comparative Literature present critical statements, to which the author will respond, on one of his best known works, 5:00 p.m., Building 260, Room 113.

… Thursday, May 5: An Evening with F. Sionil José. The author reads from his work, 7:00 p.m., Cubberley Auditorium.

Both events are free and open to the public. José's visit is co-sponsored by the Filipino-American Community at Stanford (FACS), the Stanford Bookstore, and Arkipelago, the Filipino Bookstore (San Francisco).
F. (Francisco) Sionil José was born on December 3, 1924 in Rosales, Pangasinan. In 1958, José founded the Philippine Center of PEN, an international organization of poets, playwrights, essayists, and novelists. In 1965 he established the publishing firm Solidaridad and edited the journal Solidarity. His work includes eleven novels, five books of short stories, a book of verse, a collection of stories for children, and four books of essays. His five-novel Rosales saga has been published in the United States and translated into various languages in Asia and Europe.

José has taught at De La Salle University, the University of Santo Tomas, and the University of the East, all in Manila; and at the University of California at Berkeley. He has received numerous fellowships, honorary PhDs, and awards, which include the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Award (1980); the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Centennial Honors for the Arts (1999); the National Artist Award for Literature (2001); and the Pablo Neruda Centennial Award (2004). In the New York Review of Books, Ian Buruma called José "the foremost Filipino novelist in English."

The DLCL's Writer in Residence Program, now in its second year, brings writers from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds for one-month visits to the Stanford campus. The program puts writers in direct contact with students, the Stanford community in general, and the local community as a whole, strengthening the connections between the teaching and the practice of literature. Last year's Writer in Residence was Brazilian novelist Milton Hatoum.
More information on F. Sionil José and the Writer in Residence Program can be found at http://dlcl.stanford.edu/research/writer.html.
